Why Your Exercise Book Is Killing Your Business (And What to Do Instead)
Paper records are costing Nigerian traders real money — to theft, rain, bad memory, and dishonest apprentices. Here's why, and what actually works instead.

I grew up watching business happen around me.
In Onitsha Main Market, my brother ran a trading business the way most people do — with a nwa boi (apprentice) helping him manage the shop, and an exercise book sitting on the counter to record everything. He trusted the system. He trusted his boy. He worked hard.
Then one day, he sat down to count his money and realized something was wrong. Products were leaving the shop. The exercise book said they were being sold. But the money wasn't adding up.
His nwa boi had been selling items and simply not recording them. Pocketing the difference. For months.
By the time my brother noticed, the damage was done. He let the boy go halfway through their agreed years — a serious thing in Igbo apprenticeship culture, where an oga releasing a nwa boi early carries weight for everyone involved. But what choice did he have? He had no proof of what was sold, no timestamps, no way to know how much was actually stolen. Just a half-filled exercise book and a gap in his profits he couldn't explain.
That story stayed with me.
Then I moved to Surulere, Lagos. And I started seeing the same problem from a different angle — this time as a customer. Small businesses around my area would sell me things on credit. When I came back to pay, some of them couldn't remember the exact amount. One would say ₦3,500. Another time ₦4,000. Sometimes I ended up paying more than I should have. Sometimes less. Either way, somebody was losing.
Not because these traders were careless. But because their only tool — the exercise book — was failing them quietly, every single day.
That's why I built MyTreda.
The Exercise Book Problem Nobody Talks About Openly
Exercise books are not bad tools. They're cheap, familiar, and they've worked for generations of Nigerian traders. Your parents used them. Your oga probably used one. There's no shame in it.
But here's what's changed: your business has grown. You have more customers, more products, more credit sales, and more people handling money on your behalf. The exercise book that worked when you were selling to ten people a day is now the weakest link in a business that deserves better.
And the costs are real — even when you can't see them clearly.
Six Ways Your Exercise Book Is Stealing From You
1. Rain, Spills, and One Bad Night
Nigeria's rainy season doesn't care about your records. One wet bag, one spilled drink, one flood — and years of customer names, debt amounts, and payment histories become unreadable smudges.
This isn't a rare event. It happens to traders across the country every year. When it happens to you, every debt you can no longer read is money you cannot collect. You can't ask a customer to pay you ₦18,000 if you can't show them the record. And most customers — even honest ones — will not volunteer to pay more than you can prove.
2. Missing Pages, Missing Money
Exercise books fall apart with daily use. Pages tear. Covers come off. Bindings split. A page goes missing and with it, an entire week of credit sales. You don't even notice until a customer denies owing you and you realize you have nothing to show them.
Without proof, you lose the argument. Every time.
3. Your Nwa Boi Knows the Loophole
This one is harder to say, but it needs to be said.
When your records live in a single exercise book that sits on the counter — visible to everyone, editable by anyone, with no timestamps or audit trail — you have created a perfect environment for a dishonest apprentice to take advantage.
A nwa boi who sells and doesn't record has no fear of being caught because there is nothing to catch them with. You'll notice something is off eventually. But "eventually" could be six months from now, and by then the loss is significant and the evidence is gone.
This is what happened to my brother in Onitsha. It's what happens to traders across Aba, Kano, Lagos, and everywhere the apprenticeship system runs. It's not a character problem — it's a systems problem. And a better system fixes it.
4. You Can't Find Anything Fast
A customer calls: "Oga, how much I still owe you?"
You now need to find the right book (you have three), flip through 200 pages of handwriting, find their name, add up multiple entries, subtract whatever they paid last time, and give them an answer — all while the shop is busy and three other customers are waiting.
That takes 10–15 minutes when it happens. And it happens every day. That's not just inconvenient. Those hours add up to real time you could spend serving customers, restocking, or resting.
5. Honest Mistakes That Cost You Silently
Writing ₦3,500 when you meant ₦5,300. Recording a payment under the wrong customer's name. Forgetting to write down a credit sale because the market was too busy. These aren't acts of dishonesty — they're what happens when you're managing a business with a pen and paper under pressure.
Each small mistake is money walking out quietly. You never see it happen, so you never fix it.
6. No Backup Means Total Risk
Your exercise book is a single point of failure. If it's stolen, lost, or destroyed — everything is gone. There is no second copy. There is no recovery. Three years of business records, gone in one moment.
This is not a hypothetical risk. Shops get robbed. Bags get left in danfos. Markets catch fire. When your records are on paper and that paper disappears, your money disappears with it.
What Actually Works Instead
I built MyTreda specifically to solve the problems I watched traders around me suffer — my brother in Onitsha, my neighbours in Surulere, and the thousands of traders across Nigeria running real businesses without the right tools.
Here's what changes when you switch from an exercise book:
Every Sale Has a Timestamp and a Name
When your nwa boi records a sale in MyTreda, it logs who recorded it, what was sold, how much, and exactly when. You can check this from your own phone, from anywhere, at any time. There's no way to sell something and not record it without you seeing a gap. The audit trail exists whether or not your apprentice knows you're watching.
Customer Debts Are Tracked Automatically
Every credit sale is attached to a specific customer. You can search any name and see their full history — what they bought, what they paid, what they still owe — in seconds. When they come to pay, you both see the same number. No arguments. No guessing. No awkward "I think it was around..."
Your Records Are Safe Even If Your Phone Is Stolen
Everything in MyTreda is backed up to the cloud automatically. If your phone falls in a gutter, gets stolen, or stops working, your records are still safe and can be accessed from any other device. Rain cannot touch them. Thieves cannot take them.
It Works Without Internet
No network? No problem. MyTreda works fully offline. You record sales as normal, and when your phone gets signal again, everything syncs automatically. NEPA taking light doesn't affect your records. Bad network at the market doesn't stop you from working.
You Don't Need to Be a Tech Person
If you can use WhatsApp, you can use MyTreda. It was built for traders who didn't grow up with smartphones — not for accountants or tech people. Most traders are comfortable with it within a day or two.
"But My Exercise Book Has Worked for Years"
It has. And it will continue to "work" in the sense that you can write things in it and read them back.
But working and working well are different things. A leaking bucket still carries water — but you're losing water the whole way.
The question isn't whether your exercise book functions. The question is how much it's quietly costing you every month in forgotten debts, undetected theft, wasted time, and lost records. For most traders, that number is significant. You just can't see it yet because no one has shown you the gap.
How to Make the Switch This Week
You don't need to throw your exercise book away tomorrow. Here's a realistic way to transition:
Day 1–2: Go to mytreda.com on your phone and create your account. It takes about 2 minutes, and during early access you can sign up and start right away.
Day 3–5: Open your exercise book and enter your current outstanding debts into MyTreda — the customers who owe you right now. Don't worry about old history. Just start with who owes you today.
Week 2: Start recording every new sale and credit transaction in MyTreda instead of the exercise book. Keep the exercise book on the side if it makes you feel better, but make MyTreda your main record.
Week 3 onwards: Check your dashboard every Friday. See your total debts, who owes what, and what's overdue. Let the system send WhatsApp reminders to customers before their due date — so you don't have to make the awkward call yourself.
Most traders are fully comfortable within two weeks. After that, they don't go back.
The Real Reason I Built This
I come from an Igbo family. The apprenticeship system — oga and nwa boi — is part of how we build businesses and pass down knowledge. It's a good system. It has created some of the most successful traders in Nigeria.
But it has a weakness. And that weakness is trust without verification.
When an oga has no way to independently verify what was sold, what was collected, and what is owed — they are depending entirely on the honesty of the people around them. Most nwa bois are honest. But some are not. And even honest ones make mistakes.
MyTreda doesn't replace trust. It protects it. When both the oga and the nwa boi know that every transaction is recorded and visible, the temptation to cut corners goes down. When honest mistakes happen, they're caught quickly. When debts are tracked clearly, they get paid.
This is what I wanted to build. Not because exercise books are bad, but because Nigerian traders deserve tools that actually work for the way they do business.
Your Business Has Outgrown Your Exercise Book
You've built something real. You have customers who trust you, products that move, and a business that runs. That business deserves proper tools — not a ₦300 exercise book that one rainy night can destroy.
MyTreda gives you peace of mind, a complete audit trail, and a business that runs on real numbers instead of memory and guesswork. It works on any phone. It works without internet. And it was built by someone who understands this world — not from a foreign office, but from Onitsha Main Market and the streets of Surulere.
Plans start at ₦2,500/month. And when your business is ready to grow, the Pro plan grows with you.
Try it. If it doesn't work for you, you've lost nothing. But if it does — and I believe it will — you'll wonder how you managed without it.
